Submitting Your Work
Spring Issue Deadline: April 1, 2018
First and foremost, not all submissions to Saplings can be accepted. Only the most exceptional works will be published, so if yours doesn't make the cut, don't give up! The next illustration you draw or poem you write may be the right fit for Saplings. But always be sure to follow all guidelines to ensure that you make the selection process easier for our editors.
Must-Haves
1. You must be between the age of 10 and 18.
2. You must reside in North Carolina or South Carolina.
3. You must be creative.
Now for the Technicals...
For Fiction/Poetry
-2,000 word limit on short stories, novel excerpts, and poems
- We consider all genres of fiction and all forms of poetry.
- Explicit language/profanity, sexual content, or graphic violence will NOT be accepted in either written or visual forms.
- Sorry, we cannot accept fan fiction featuring characters created by other authors due to potential copyright infringement issues.
-If you exceed the word limit or submit something outside our guidelines, you will be sent a polite rejection email. If you can edit your work to adhere to the guidelines, please feel free to resubmit it.
For Nonfiction
-Saplings would like to consider your best articles about current events in your community. We would love to read about what kids are doing to make a positive impact on their schools or towns for our "Sprouting Up" section.
-Again, explicit language/profanity, sexual content, or graphic violence will NOT be accepted in either written or visual forms.
For Photography and Art
-We accept art and photography in digital form only.
-Please be sure to submit your photo at its highest resolution in its largest format
-Scan your art at the highest resolution possible.
- If you are a sculptor, we will accept photographs of your work as long as they are well-lit and focused.
-And again we say, explicit language/profanity, sexual content, or graphic violence will NOT be accepted in either written or visual forms.
-Sorry, we do not publish art featuring trademarked characters such as Disney princesses, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Japanese anime characters. We want art that YOU design!
Steps to Submitting Your Work
1. Please make sure an adult has read and edited your writing. A teacher, parent, or grandparent can pick up on any mistakes you may have made and save us some time. Plus, your submission needs to look professional and errors just aren't professional.
2. Type up your story or scan your illustration.
3. Email your best work as an attachment to [email protected]. We CANNOT read Mac files, so please submit only PDFs, MS Word docs or docx files. For photos, please submit only jpg files.
4. Now wait for a response! Expect to get an email letting you know we have received your submission. We will let you know if your work will be published within two to four weeks of receipt.
